In-Take:

Children ages 6 to 19 and their families are enrolled through various outreach methods; they take part in an orientation session, and then submit an application. Families are interviewed, i.e., the youth and family member(s) of interest, eligibility, family background, and existing relationships. Once accepted, the youth is enrolled in weekly academic, social service sessions and eventually matched in a one-to-one mentoring relationship with a screened and trained volunteer mentor. Age appropriate participants also take part in scheduled workshops regarding empowerment and financial literacy. Monthly case management files are conducted.

Angel Colon, school teacher from Stuyvesant High School, works closely with & oversees IAR tutorial program Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Pre med students serve as tutors and provide 200 hours of community service for IAR. This is combined with social work interns from Lehman College who provide 200 hours of field work placement and are supervised by our part time on site MSW, Casper Lasitter. Our combined academic team is structured to supervise completion of homework, interface with school representatives to track academic and behavioral progress of each child. Each child is provided an Individual Educational Plan (IPE). Children are required to attend regularly and present their report cards in order to remain in the program.

Music & Arts Program:

John Forte, Grammy-nominated, singer, song writer, producer aims to
use the transformative power of music and artistic expression to further contribute to IAR’s successful program by creating a curriculum to address emotions such as anger, stress or pain faced by the children participating in IAR’s program. Considering most of the country’s youth relates to the entertainment world, Forte seeks to empower young people by capitalizing on their passion for music to develop skills that will help them lead productive lives. Forte’s mission is to create initiatives to inspire children to compose music, write lyrics, and participate in live shows. By developing music workshops Forte hopes to rebuild the spirits of those who have been traumatized or abandoned to create a more positive, nurturing and supportive environment. With more than one in every 100 adults in America in prison, Forte feels that bringing music to the youth and allowing people to express emotion through song might give children the confidence and support they need to rebuild & empower their spirits.
