What We Do
In Arms Reach, Inc. (IAR) – is a 501 (C) (3) community based organization uniquely located at The City College University of New York. The agency services disconnected youths, children and families of NYC impacted by parental incarceration.
Our mission is to break the cycle of inter-generational incarceration of children and families by promoting equity in economic, psychological, and sociological contexts through tutoring, mentoring, college prep, social services and visitation trips to reunite children with their parent.
We serviced over 2,000 individuals, youth, their siblings, guardians, and other family members. We provided more than 35,000 hours of after-school tutoring with state-of-the-art facilities, thousands of mentoring sessions, intensive college prep curriculum, social projects and activities, and dozens of free visitation trips to upstate facilities so that children can maintain connections with their missing parents residing behind bars.
We create a platform where children are empowered to speak openly about their family histories to help digest any feelings of anger, sorrow and frustration. Our goal is to introduce new educational resources to in a collegiate setting, normalize education beyond high school, and spark the imagination and conversations about their future.
Through its services, IAR empowers at-risk youth and provides them with the opportunity to develop new skills and realize their full potential. IAR understands that the cycle of inter-generational involvement in the criminal justice system can be broken if social, economic and educational inequities are addressed.
We’ve found that our site and these benefits and resources amplify Positive Youth Development.
